Violation of Social Norms

Introduction

Society lives by social norms. These are unwritten rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society. If you break a social norm you are considered to be deviant. Meaning that you are departing from usual or accepted behavior. But who or what defines social norms? What makes you deviant? Social norms are created by the cultural norms of society. Or the person in social power (popular group in high school) defines the norms. If you violate these norms, you are being deviant, and are labeled as a deviant individual. Well, for this assignment we had to violate a social norm. I was afraid; luckily my husband was willing to do the first experiment for me. We violated not only one but two social norms.
