Introduction

African Americans have overcome many things in our culture. First we were slaves taken from our homeland. And for about 400 years we endured years of torture, hard labor with no wages, being ripped apart from our families. Women were raped, we were beaten and killed. Finally in 1863 slavery was abolished. But we were still considered inferior or beneath the white man. With no education the African American people knew nothing but work. Schools were put in place but they were separate. The African American community was still given the short end of the stick. But after years of people like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and many more we were finally seen in a new light. Still it was not the best light. But we have overcame so much. The way people view us has changed, or has it? And an even better question, how do we view ourselves? And how do our children view us or themselves? Well, I can say that many children view black not as a power, but as a struggle.
